January 2015 newsletter
Dear fellow alums, It’s hard to believe that we are now in the process of admitting the MHA Class of 2017! To date, we have had over 100 applications and they keep coming in. As many of you may remember, our faculty conduct in-person interviews with our strongest candidates so that we can learn more about what’s behind the numbers. We have completed–or scheduled–40 interviews and have admitted 20 students thusfar, with two committing to our program. I have been extremely pleased with the academic caliber of our applicants, but more than that I have been impressed with their many accomplishments, leadership potential, and passion for healthcare. From this perspective, the future of our field looks bright! A critical part of our interview day is a lunch session where the candidates meet informally with a small group of current students and alumni. These sessions are a great way for the applicants to learn more about the OSU MHA experience, and (from a recruiting perspective) we like to showcase one of our best assets: alumni! If you have any interest in participating one of these sessions then please let me know. Alumni who have participated in the past really seem to have enjoyed the opportunity to meet with the new students. As always, many thanks for all that you do to support our program. Not a day goes by that I don’t appreciate all that HSMPAS does for us; from helping with recruitment and admissions, supporting residents, serving as alumni coaches, and much much more. I look forward to continuing to work with you over the coming year! Julie Robbins, PhD, MHA ’93 AFHE to host Annual Ed Adams Leadership Development Symposium and Case CompetitionThe Association of Future Healthcare Executives (AFHE), Ohio State’s student organization for Master of Health Administration students, will be hosting the 12th annual Ed Adams Leadership Development Symposium (LDS) on Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 5-9 p.m. at the OSU Golf Club. There will be a networking and cocktail hour, dinner, and a keynote address. This year’s keynote speaker will be current President and Chief Executive Officer of OhioHealth, David Blom. The cost for general attendees will be $35. (Registration information coming soon.) The LDS event will take place in conjunction with the 4th annual Ohio State University First Year Health Administration Case Competition, which is entirely organized by OSU MHA students. Last year’s event drew 12 teams from eight universities, providing students with an opportunity to deliver a formal presentation on healthcare issues they were asked to address based on their current skills and knowledge. This year’s case competition will take place on Friday, April 10, 2015 in the Ohio Union. How Can I Get Involved? Judges – AFHE is in need of healthcare professionals to judge the case competition presentations. Each judge will serve on a preliminary round panel in the morning or on the final round panel in the afternoon. Sponsors – AFHE is also in need of individual and corporate sponsorships. Our 2015 sponsorship goal is $5,000. Sponsorship levels are as follows: Platinum Sponsorship ($1,000) Gold Sponsorship ($500) Silver Sponsorship ($250) To help support this year’s events as a sponsor and/or judge, please contact OSUCaseCompetition@gmail.com as soon as possible for more information. We look forward to seeing many alumni at both this year’s LDS and Case Competition events! Thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
